Carol (DVD Review)

15 – 114mins – 2015

THE L WORD

Intense central performances from award contenders Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett elevate this slow, tender and often understated lesbian romance from director Todd I’m Not There Haynes to another level.

Adapted from the pioneering Patricia Highsmith novel The Price of Salt (1952), Carol tells a frustrating and often melancholic narrative of a forbidden love affair in a more reserved and less understanding time.

The power of the piece often shines through lingering and intimate gazes and exchanges, making for a smouldering and captivating if momentum-less study which undoubtedly deserves attention, if perhaps not the near-unanimous rapturous critical acclaim it received.
