GET HOME OR DIE TRYING

“Who wants to spend the rest of their life in Munty?!”

The date of the super-solstice is drawing near and Brian Weaver (James Buckley) is finally going to get the opportunity to be magicked back to 21st century Britain – and a change of clothes – provided liquor-loving conjuror Howell (Paul Kaye) can stay off the Rhubarb Seizures long enough to recant the spell! With Barbara’s (Sharon Rooney) new date (Ciaran Dowd) guaranteeing the gang easy access to the Henge, it seems like nothing will stand in the way of Brian’s return journey – except maybe for the two bounty hunters who are hot on the heels of the traveller from another world…

THE THROCK’S THE THING

“Welcome to the most important job in showbusiness!”

A single f-bomb earns Zapped its first ‘15’ rating with what is – in my humble opinion – the krunting best of its eight aired to date. Alan Partridge’s Mid-Morning Matters co-host, Tim Key, guest stars as the lead actor of travelling group The Brevit Players, who Brian (James Buckley) joins as the sandwich-board carrier and general dogsbody, hoping to follow the theatrical troupe all the way to the City of a Thousand Towers – and his ticket home.

PEARS BE WITH YOU

“May your pear juice be sweet.”

When two pear watch guards (Simon Day and Javone “Empty Orchestra” Prince) are inexplicably fired the day before Munty’s highly anticipated Pear Fair, a baffled Brian (James Buckley) jumps at the opportunity to apply for the job of guarding the sacred albino pears in the walled orchard. With his wages, he plans to journey to the City of a Thousand Towers in time for the Super Solstice, hoping to take advantage of the thin wall between worlds and return to his rightful dimension.

ROBOT REVOLUTION

Last week’s bold, PC-satirising shenanigans certainly divided the hardcore fanbase (read my review of “Timewave” HERE), although overnight numbers have confirmed that audience figures for Dave’s flagship original (re-) commission went UP for last night’s broadcast on the official home of witty banter, so I’m hoping all new boarders who alighted upon the good ship Red Dwarf stick around for this week’s far superior slice of sci-fi sitcommery.

RICH TASTES

Halfway through this second series and stranded twenty-first century everyman Brian Weaver (James Charlie Countryman Buckley) is becoming bored with his limited circle of less-than-exceptional companions and his lacklustre new existence in the fantastical medieval province. Even news of Herman’s (Louis Emerick) upcoming anniversary party celebrating 15 years of “proper old school taverny” at The Jug and Other Jug can’t convince Brian to stay away from Munty’s newly-opened trendy bar.

PROTECTION AND PARENTHOOD

After last week’s reserved return gave us an opportunity to reacquaint ourselves with Munty’s main players (2.1 – “The Trial” reviewed HERE), Zapped bursts to life in series two’s sophomore instalment, “Magic Darts,” which sees stranded modern-day office temp Brian Weaver (James Buckley) take a crash course in conjuring from dubious “licenced mage” Howell (Paul Kaye), in order to keep himself from further harm in this medieval fantasy land.

Mindhorn (Cinema Review)

15 – 89mins – 2017

YOU CAN’T HANDCUFF THE WIND

“It’s truth time!”

In the late 80s, Richard Thorncroft (Julian Aaaaaaaah! Barratt) had the world at his brogue-wearing feet. As the star of crime-fighting action/adventure series Mindhorn, he had money, fame and the show’s hottest “totty,” Patricia Deville (Essie Davis), on his arm. But a quarter of a century on the actor has fallen on hard times. While his co-star, Peter Eastman (Steve Alan Partridge Coogan) has flourished in his own hit spin-off, Mindhorn is little more than a nostalgic memory, with a balding, out-of-shape Thorncroft reduced to embarrassing himself in scarce auditions and hocking cheap tat in adverts. Hollywood never called.

Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa (Blu-ray Review)

15 – 97mins – 2013

HECTIC DANGER DAY

From accidentally shooting a guest on his BBC chat show to pulping thousands of unsold copies of his ironically titled self-published autobiography, Bouncing Back, it is fair to say that Norwich’s very own Alan Gordon Partridge (Steve Coogan) has had a tumultuous career. But where many lesser regional TV personalities would long ago have thrown in the towel (probably around the time he became “clinically fed up” on a Toblerone-fuelled trip to Dundee), this chap of steel carries on regardless, determined to have the last laugh.

PIPE DREAMS

Ten series and two episodes ago – in the hazy mists of 1988’s I.4, to be precise – was the last time Cat (Danny John-Jules) was given his own episode. “Waiting For God” established the evolution – and mass-migration – of the felis sapien race away from Red Dwarf. Since then, everyone’s favourite sharp-suited pussy has been ever-present (if not ever reliable) on ship, but more in an auxiliary role.
