Community cutie Alison Brie headlines this fictionalised account of the 1985 formation of the syndicated female wrestling promotion, the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (or G.L.O.W. for short), which was highly publicised as being from the creator of Orange is the New Black. While Jenji Kohan does have an executive producer credit, GLOW’s creator duo – Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch – also have previous industry experience as writers of high profile US shows such as Weeds, Homeland and Nurse Jackie.

The Circle (Netflix Review)

FULLY TRANSPARENT

In light of a paltry US box office haul and surfeit negative reviews, this speculative techo-thriller was ignobly dumped onto UK Netflix on Sunday, little over two months after it crashed out of Stateside cinemas. It’s a shame, really, as The Circle’s tackling of human rights issues in our ever-more digitized, online age is resonantly timely, while the stellar cast (including John The Force Awakens Boyega and recently departed Bill Paxton) are all exuberant.

SYMBOLS & TENTACLES

Predominantly set in a soon-to-be-abandoned hospital, this Canadian love letter to old-school, low-budget, 80s horror packs a bucket-load of (high) concepts, masterful physical effects and thematic homages into its ostensibly limited set-up, courtesy of some creatively unhinged plot developments.
