After his Amazing Spider-Man reboot came unspun after two fun-but-bloated comic-book adventures, director Marc Webb has returned to the more comfortable and earthy terrain of human drama which won him universal acclaim with 2009’s glorious (500) Days of Summer.

MUMMY’S VERY ANGRY

“I bet I can overcome your childhood fears…”

Emerging from a swirling cloud of claret, a gawping beheaded fish face drifts, gurning, towards the screen. Blasting out from behind it, Superman-style, a bold, heavily-shadowed multi-coloured font welcomes you confidently to the, err, visual spectacle that is Jaws 3-D. And so Peter Benchley’s killer shark franchise swims on, despite now being far removed from the author’s original prose inspiration.

WELCOME TO THE CRAZY CLUB

“You don’t need to talk, just look pretty.”

It has taken four years, but I have finally relented and taken a peek at the Channing Tatum pec show (AKA. Magic Mike). Loosely based on the star’s eyebrow-raising pre-Hollywood experiences, with its flashy, shimmering DVD cover almost blinding me with glittery glamour, I can’t help but feel like director Steven Soderbergh’s often dark and depressing glimpse behind the curtain of Tampa’s male strip scene has been as mis-sold as the bawdy industry it portrays.
