GLADIA-THOR, READY? REVENGERS, READY?

In recent years, Disney and Marvel have become notorious for the short leashes on which they keep their directors. Even if your name is Edgar Baby Driver Wright, if your Ant Man passion project doesn’t toe the corporate line, you’re out. Likewise, Lord and Miller were recently ousted from the Han Solo Star Wars spin-off because their take on the Kasdan’s script was too irreverent. The body double twist which capped off Iron Man 3 was derided for making a mockery of Marvel lore, while Joss Whedon has openly held his hands up to the difficult production on 2015’s Age of Ultron, a sequel which too often went for a gag.

CIRQUE DU PSYCHOPATH

Ant-Man aside, I have invariably been on the ball with watching all of Marvel Studio’s blockbuster comic book adaptations during their cinematic runs. Inversely, the television spin-offs have somehow evaded by attention. I’m not against seeing them, but I don’t consider them essential to the MCU. Plus, once I fell behind on Daredevil, I felt inclined to hold off on Jessica Jones and Luke Cage until I could watch them in production order.

WOLVERINE: THE X GENERATION

13 months ago, Deadpool delighted 20th Century Fox by making a pretty penny at the box office despite being the first superhero blockbuster of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to be certified 18. In a profit-minded climate where tentpole releases are skewed towards the money-maximising 12A rating, Deadpool took a risk and it paid off. Perhaps this is why Fox were more supportive of The Wolverine director James Mangold’s grisly-toned concept for the ultimate send-off for the X-Men’s signature star.
