THE PRINCE OF HUMBUG

Eight years in the making, this original musical ring-mastered by Hugh “Wolverine” Jackman and directed by first-timer Michael Gracey is a spectacular if haphazard showpiece which often struggles to marry song and story with a true feeling of authenticity. Ironically for a film about a purveyor of hoaxes, The Greatest Showman has been criticised for taking giant liberties with its biographing of circus founder P.T. Barnum (Jackman) and his unconventional star attractions.

THE CHAPTER BEFORE THE NEXT

Three years out of college, we re-join the (former) Barden Bellas as they embark on the next chapter of their lives… except none of them much like adult life and all are far too desperate to re-live their glory days and sing with their competition-winning a cappella troupe again. Hating their jobs and no longer with their boyfriends, they all jump at the opportunity to perform together one more time, at a set of concerts for the troops on an overseas United Services Organisation tour.

Thanks to my new working relationship with the guys and gal over at podcast/website 60 Minutes With, I was hugely excited to accept an invitation to the Screening Rooms in London’s Soho at the tail-end of October to see an exclusive critics-only preview screening of this fantastical musical Japanese Anime feature. With its limited UK cinema release beginning yesterday, the embargo has been lifted and I can now post a link to my review of Masaaki Yuasa’s Lu Over the Wall.

DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH

As a much-watched and much-adored film in my youth, the recently-opened West End production of Disney’s animated classic Aladdin has been on my “must see” list since it made the move from Broadway to UK shores in June of last year. After far fewer than “One Thousand and One Nights,” I was fortunate enough to take a magic carpet ride to London’s Prince Edward Theatre last week for a weekday evening performance of this magical musical extravaganza.

Beauty and the Beast (Cinema Review)

A READY-FURNISHED CLASSIC

Disney continue their recent trend of mining past animated hits for future live action gold (as I write it is currently the highest grossing film of 2017) with this fifth conversion – following Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, Cinderella and The Jungle Book (which I reviewed HERE) – of one of their greatest ‘toons as old as time into 3 living, breathing, singing and dancing dimensions.

TAPPED OUT

Expectation can be a cruel bastard. My girlfriend and I – both fans of musicals having recently seen both Thriller Live on tour and Matilda in the West End – had been greatly anticipating the opportunity to finally see the box office behemoth and awards-contender that is La La Land. Everyone has already seen it, and it seems, loved it. Alas, my car broke down on the way to the cinema some weeks ago, meaning our thirst had to wait to be sated until last weekend.

BOOGIE WONDERLAND

Recently recognised as the 17th longest running production in West End history, in the eight years it has been thrilling audiences I have seen Gary Lloyd’s spectacular tribute to the King of Pop on three separate occasions.
