MUTEY AND THE BEAST

As we enter awards season, Guillermo del Toro’s allegorical fairy tale is a strong contender for swimming away with all the glory, garnering a staggering 13 Academy Award nominations – for a strictly adult-only dark fantasy, no less! I was fortunate enough to attend a Cineworld Unlimited Screening on Tuesday evening, ahead of The Shape of Water‘s UK theatrical roll-out on February 16th, although I must confess my appreciation for this Oscar frontrunner was not without impediments.

Fourteen years after embittered black comedy Bad Santa became something of a cult hit for seasonal scrooges, stars Billy Bob Thornton, Tony Cox and Brett Kelly return for another lewd, crude Christmas caper. Alas, lightening did not strike twice, and this belated and bedraggled festive follow-up is as unapologetically egregious as the Farley Brother’s down-right disgusting and offensive Dumb and Dumber To.

After his Amazing Spider-Man reboot came unspun after two fun-but-bloated comic-book adventures, director Marc Webb has returned to the more comfortable and earthy terrain of human drama which won him universal acclaim with 2009’s glorious (500) Days of Summer.
