SAVE YOUR BREATH

“Can you imagine how unbearable I’ll be when I get us out of this?”

Infuriated that his employer is reneging on his vow to stay at the university and guard the vault, an admonishing Nardole (Matt Lucas) piggybacks on the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Bill’s (Pearl Mackie) answering of a distress call on a space station which mines copper ore in the final frontier. On board, the trio come face-to-face with a contingent of zombie-nauts – 36 dead members of the 40-strong crew whose walking corpses are automated by their SmartSuits.

INFESTED DIGS

“No living puddles, weird robots or big fish. Just a new house. Nothing scary.”

New student Bill (Pearl Mackie) finds trying to get back to normal life after three weeks of travelling with the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) is more difficult than it sounds. A rattle-bang opening montage shows her and five uni pals struggling to find suitable off campus accommodation to move into, until a suspiciously generous Landlord (David Peter Pan Goes Wrong Suchet) offers them his antiquated manor – replete with out-of-bounds tower – for a hard-to-resist price.

THE LAST GREAT FROST FAIR

Following immediately on from the in-built teaser at the tail end of “Smile” (reviewed HERE), series 10 roars into its third week with unabashed gusto. We began in the present (“The Pilot”, reviewed HERE), shot forward to the future and now it’s time for a history lesson! The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Bill (Pearl Mackie) find themselves in London, 1814, where the Thames is frozen over and mysterious green lights can be seen swimming beneath the surface.

DEATH TO THE UNHAPPY

“Who needs loos? There’s probably an app for that!”

Following her introduction to the Doctor’s perception-altering life outside the University in last week’s “The Pilot” (reviewed HERE), eager beaver Bill (Pearl Mackie) was given her first proper test drive in the T.A.R.D.I.S. this Saturday. Aside from a perfunctory cameo which established a curious father-son dynamic between the Time Lord (Peter Capaldi) and cheeky sidekick Nardole (Matt Lucas), the bald alien was all but absent from proceedings, giving the new companion an opportunity to bond with her new “lecturer.”

BEAUTY OR CHIPS?

With series ten confirmed as the last hurrah for current Doctor Patrick Capaldi and showrunner Steven Moffat, this seems like a premature time to have a soft reboot, but as the introductory episode of latest companion Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie), the facetiously-titled “The Pilot” was as good a time as any to reinstate some of the long-running BBC institution’s ground-rules to a new audience. So we have a joke about the enigmatic Time-lord’s name (“Doctor what?”), a cameo from his greatest adversary, frequent nods to the true nature of the stuck-in-the-guise-of-a-Police-Box T.A.R.D.I.S., and bemused questions from the perspective of a franchise newbie (“Is this a knock-through?”).
