REOPENING THE DOOR

“That future wasn’t meant to be and I was an arrogant fool to challenge fate.”

A brief-yet-pointedly macabre horror novella spread over just 140 occasionally-illustrated yellow-hued pages, young adult author Juno Dawson’s twisted tale of first loves lost and best left lost is a quick read perfectly suited to entice reading adverse older teens and dyslexics alike.

A Good Marriage (DVD Review)

ONE BAD PENNY

As beloved and masterful as Stephen King’s horror stories may be, it’s fair to say that the majority work far better on page than on screen. Sure, there are some truly classic adaptations (Carrie, Misery, The Shawshank Redemption, The Mist), but they are outnumbered by some – to be blunt – risible guff (Cell, Maximum Overdrive, Dreamcatcher, Thinner, Secret Window).

QUAKER OATS

Indie queen Greta Gerwig is perfectly cast as vibrantly independent but controlling thirty-something Maggie in director Rachel Miller’s adaptation of Karen Rinaldi’s short story. Nocturnal Animals (Cinema Review)

CREATIVE AROUSAL

I went into Nocturnal Animals practically blind. I knew it starred Amy Arrival Adams and an almost recognisable Aaron Taylor-Johnson; I knew Mark Kermode commended it (I caught part of an interview he did with the stars on the red carpet at the film’s UK premiere) and I knew my regular cinema-going friends rated it highly. Otherwise, I was blind as a bat!
