THE TROUBLE WITH ST. TREMBLES

At this halfway juncture I don’t think it’s premature for me to declare Red Dwarf XII an extraordinary run of the popular British sci-fi sitcom. In three episodes we have had three very diverse and unpredictably inventive approaches to the formula. “Cured” was a confident mystery with historical guest stars, “Siliconia” a grandiose gem borne out of a gimmick, while this week’s standalone instalment is a blatant satirical swipe at the PC brigade; madness mocking madness.

PIE AND HAMMER

Expanded from last year’s water-testing micro-run (click the following links for my 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 reviews), digital channel Dave’s original fantasy sitcom makes a welcome return next week, once again nestled in a post-Red Dwarf XII Thursday night slot. “The Trial” follows directly on from “Mr. Wuffles”‘s cliffhanger ending, in which modern day office temp-out-of-water Brian Weaver (James The Inbetweeners Buckley) has inadvertently pissed off a legion of shell-backed Snail people by kicking their ambassador, which he had mistaken for a football.

TEA WITH MESSALINA

“Okay, starting her up…”

Having had to endure a ten year gap between 1999’s Series VIII cliffhanger and anniversary mini-series Back to Earth, followed by a further three-and-a-half year wait before the series-proper returned with 2012’s Series X, and another four before XI was commissioned, it’s fair to say that the comparatively sprightly 12-month turnaround between last year’s Red Dwarf XI and today’s UKTV Play online premiere of XII’s opener, “Cured”, feels like a mere blink of an eye – but more Dwarf is always a welcome treat and the sooner the better!

DAD EDUCATION

Despite being on a plethora of popular panel shows and performing sell-out stand-up comedy tours for the best part of the last decade, Fresh Meat ‘toff’ Jack Whitehall is still in his twenties. His act has often played upon not only the naivety of his age but also his sheltered-if-cushy upbringing by his stuffy agent-to-the-stars father, Michael. The jovial comic and his often stubbornly-rigid pa have previously partnered up as an odd couple on BBC chat show Backchat, but now streaming super-service Netflix has paid for the Bad Education star to have the gap year he never went on – provided his dad tags along for the (joy)ride!

ENTER: ME

“Sometimes down is up, up is down. Sometimes when you’re lost, you’re found.”

For the second time in its first three instalments, Star Trek: Discovery has a ‘pilot’ episode, as 1.3 shoots forward six months from the USS Shenzhou’s clash with the Klingons and Captain Georgiou’s death, following Michael Burnham’s (Sonequa Martin-Green) heavily-contested and unorthodox efforts to save the ship, her captain and crew. Now, the woman who will not reply to “Mickey” is a silent, resigned, person-adverse prisoner being transferred to do mining work to help the Federation’s war effort.

LIGHT THE BEACON

“They are coming.”

After a century of only fleeting interaction between the Starfleet of Earth and the warriors of the Klingon Empire, a war is on the horizon as the Klingons pursue a “crusade of self-preservation” against those who purport to “come in peace.” Captain Philippa Georgiou’s (Michelle Mechanic: Resurrection Yeoh) USS Shenzhou is the Federation starship which first encounters the oncoming storm…

COLLECTING STRAYS

Last week we deviated from June/Offred’s (Elisabeth Moss) tale by flashing back to her new mistress’s life pre-Gilead. In episode 7 of this ten-part Hulu/MGM adaptation, our eponymous handmaid is even more of a bit-part player as the fate of her estranged husband, Luke (O-T Fagbenle), is presented to us.
