CRUSH JUSTICE

“Plebs die sometimes, boo-bloody-hoo!”

It’s always a pity when a popular show loses one of its leads, and with Joel Fry off chasing ghosts and missing girls in supernatural BBC drama Requiem, I feared a Plebs without cocksure optimist and vital ingredient Stylax Eurisces would be like Red Dwarf without Arnold J. Rimmer – and we all know how successful that wasn’t in series VII!

TRAFFIC LIGHT FIASCO

After arguably kicking off 2017’s festive television in the run-up to Christmas with a trio of celebratory “Anniversary Specials” marking 20 years of their surreal BBC breakthrough hit The League of Gentleman, two of the League return to bookend the yuletide schedules with the first episode in the fourth series of their wickedly macabre anthology series. All it would have taken was for Mark Gatiss’ Sherlock to have a New Year’s adventure as in years gone by, and it would have been nothing short of an outright TV takeover!!

GET HOME OR DIE TRYING

“Who wants to spend the rest of their life in Munty?!”

The date of the super-solstice is drawing near and Brian Weaver (James Buckley) is finally going to get the opportunity to be magicked back to 21st century Britain – and a change of clothes – provided liquor-loving conjuror Howell (Paul Kaye) can stay off the Rhubarb Seizures long enough to recant the spell! With Barbara’s (Sharon Rooney) new date (Ciaran Dowd) guaranteeing the gang easy access to the Henge, it seems like nothing will stand in the way of Brian’s return journey – except maybe for the two bounty hunters who are hot on the heels of the traveller from another world…

MULTIVERSE MEDLEY

After “Mechocracy” (reviewed HERE) brought back a blast from the past in the form of a toast-obsessed kitchen appliance and “M-Corp” (reviewed HERE) ended with a middle-aged recreation of Red Dwarf’s first ever scene, Doug Naylor rounds off this critically-and-commercially successful twelfth series of the popular British sci-fi sitcom with some Rick & Morty and Futurama-esque disasters in the multiverse which could very easily be seen as a perfectly nostalgic send-off to the show, were it not for the fact that this Dave-era revival has been such a hit that a series XIII – and possibly even a live show – seems like a shoe-in.

THE THROCK’S THE THING

“Welcome to the most important job in showbusiness!”

A single f-bomb earns Zapped its first ‘15’ rating with what is – in my humble opinion – the krunting best of its eight aired to date. Alan Partridge’s Mid-Morning Matters co-host, Tim Key, guest stars as the lead actor of travelling group The Brevit Players, who Brian (James Buckley) joins as the sandwich-board carrier and general dogsbody, hoping to follow the theatrical troupe all the way to the City of a Thousand Towers – and his ticket home.

UPDATES INSTALLED

While a few of the jokes in series XII have riffed on over-familiar tropes from Red Dwarf‘s past (Lister’s dodgy guitar skillz, Cat’s less-than-subtle ribs about rid of Rimmer, Kryten’s love of cleaning), plot-wise, this latest batch of six space adventures for the remaining crew of the JMC’s finest has really upped the ante and pushed the ‘Bug out like never before.

RICH TASTES

Halfway through this second series and stranded twenty-first century everyman Brian Weaver (James Charlie Countryman Buckley) is becoming bored with his limited circle of less-than-exceptional companions and his lacklustre new existence in the fantastical medieval province. Even news of Herman’s (Louis Emerick) upcoming anniversary party celebrating 15 years of “proper old school taverny” at The Jug and Other Jug can’t convince Brian to stay away from Munty’s newly-opened trendy bar.
